6:00 reception, 7:00pm promenade
Join the Mitchell Center and Buffalo Bayou Partnership for Unsilent Night, our annual interactive holiday event. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Unsilent Night so please join us for this extra special holiday celebration!
Unsilent Night is a soundscape created when many individuals simultaneously play one of four different tracks on their smartphone, boomboxes, or mp3 players. It all started in winter 1992, when contemporary New York composer, Phil Kline, composed a 43-minute multi-track electronic piece, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. Unsilent Night takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Revelers will walk a carefully chosen route beginning at The Water Works, a new site along the Buffalo Bayou. Each participant receives one of four tracks of the composition that can easily be downloaded on your smart phone prior to your arrival. When participants play their different “parts” together, it helps to create the special sound of the piece.
Join us for a 6:00pm public reception prior to the Unsilent Night promenade at 7:00pm. Saint Arnold Brewing Company and Katz Coffee will be providing complimentary beverages and the Fusion Taco truck will have food available for purchase. Unsilent Night is family friendly so bring the kids out to our holiday craft table on site!
This year, we’ll be hosting a costume contest for the most “lit” outfit so dress festive! Dig up that light-up sweater your grandma got you and come join the promenade. Prizes will be awarded to revelers with the most lit up, celebratory outfit!

A few key things to know before you arrive. There are different ways to participate: smartphones, boomboxes, laptops, mp3 players, or anything that plays music!
If you’re using a smartphone: The free Unsilent Night app is available for iOS download through the Apple App Store here and Android download through the Amazon App Store here. The app must be downloaded while connected to Wi-Fi so please download it before arriving to The Water Works! Once it’s on your phone, you’ll be able to easily play any of the four selected tracks on your phone the night of the event. If you need any help downloading the app in advance of the event, please email us and we’ll help you figure it out!
If you are using a boombox: We’ll have a few Unsilent Night CDs available for guests to play on their own boomboxes as well as a few boomboxes already loaded with CDs available for guests to use during the parade.
If you’re using an mp3 player: Each of the four Unsilent Night tracks are available here for free download under “Download a Sound File.” You are welcome to pick any one of the tracks you’d like to play that night. If you are coming in a group, we encourage you to download different tracks. If you plan on using an mp3 player, please bring a speaker – the louder the better!
Make sure to bring your cell phone fully charged, dress warmly and festive, and wear comfortable shoes. If you have portable speakers for your smartphone or listening device, please bring those as well! We will have a limited number of boomboxes and speakers available for use during the parade.
