Yu Qingcheng, is a sculptor from Jixian County, Tianjin, in the People's Republic of China.
His joyful clay sculptures are a delight to see, and have been highly praised by masters in
cultural and artistic circles.
Mr. Yu's art is a product of the Chinese "cultural revolution." Yu was the son of a wealthy
landlord whose family was stripped of their wealth during the revolution. As a result of the
change in life style, he was denied a formal education. Instead, he was sent to a labor camp
to be reeducated on how poor people live. He worked as a shepherd and did hard labor, but
daily worked with soil and developed a special way of molding clay figurines. Through self study
he become an artist. In his 30's he was given the opportunity to study for two years in the
Tianjin Academy of fine Arts.
His clay figures are so lifelike that he is widely know in Jixian. He can work with and enjoy the
character of any kind of clay. Sculpture is one of the ancient arts in human history. Yu's works
combine traditional Chinese culture with his own unique personality. His molding gives prominence to
the head, hands, and feet. Almost all of his works are soul-stirring and inspiring and show his
awe toward life. His work embodies simplicity, enthusiasm, and optimism.
