Leave the Olympic Games Out of Politics
----- An open Letter to Congressmen Al Green and Nick Lampson

April 12, 2008

Dear Congressmen Al Green and Nick Lampson,

We, the undersigned Chinese Americans and Chinese residents in your districts, have been much disturbed in recent days by the actions of some small groups of Tibetan independents and human rights activists that either disrupted or altered the route for the carrying of the Olympic torch in several European cities and the city of San Francisco. We are equally disturbed by the sensationalized reporting by the American media for such events. With this open letter, we urge you to use your influence as elected representatives of the people in your districts to help curb such developments that would only tarnish the spirit of the Olympic Games, hurt the feelings of 1.3 billion people in China and many Chinese Americans in the US, and harm the process of democratization in China.

Hosting the 2008 Olympic Games has been a dream of billions of Chinese in China and around the world. In the past several decades, the Chinese people through their own efforts in economic and political reforms have gradually transformed a state-controlled economy into one that is largely market-driven and maintained rapid, sustained economic growth, remarkably improving the standards of living for over 1.3 billion people, nearly a quarter of the world’s population. They have barely tasted the sweet fruits of such efforts and are eagerly wishing to embrace the world family by contributing their share. Hosting the 2008 summer Olympics is regarded by many in China as the realization of a long-cherished dream, a dream of finally and completely eradicating the stigma of their beloved country as the “Sick Man of the East” and a dream to enjoy the liberty as world citizens. They have worked hard to become a part of the world family, and they deserve a fare chance!

“One World, One Dream!” That is the theme song of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It clearly expresses the wish to be part of the world family by a people with a long history of civilization, but also a people who suffered many humiliations for being poor and weak in the not too distant past. The successful hosting of the Games will allow the rest of the world to understand such a people, to see what China and its people are like today, and to realize what the Chinese can positively contribute to humankind. It was the “open-door” policy initiated by China’s own leaders and carried out by hundreds of millions hard-working, good-willed people that helped China re-emerge into the world. They have done a great job, and they deserve to be respected and honored by peoples around the world!

Granted that there is room for improvement of human rights and democracy in China, and granted that the people in China could enjoy more freedom like us in the US, but who is to improve the conditions of human rights in that country, and who is to bring about more democracy for those people? The Chinese are as proud a people as any around the world, and they are not going to be dictated by foreign powers. Will hostile actions like disrupting the carrying of the Olympic torch and foolish ideas like boycotting the opening ceremony or the Games do any good for the people of China? No! That is the last thing that would help. It will only send China once again into isolation. It will only make history go backward. And it will only hurt rather than help the Chinese people in gaining the freedom and democracy they deserve. The people in China know what they want and will strive to achieve what they desire. They deserve the right to do things at their own will and their own pace!

We believe that the anti-China sensations represented the wish of only some isolated groups of people who, if not ill-willed, must not have a good understanding of China and its people. We urge you, Congressmen, to help get our points across to your colleagues in Congress and to the people of America so that everyone can understand what we believe are at stake: It is the spirit of the Olympic Games that is at stake. It is the interest of the Chinese people, not China’s Central Government, that is at stake. And it is the friendship between the peoples of America and China that is at stake.

Let’s leave the Olympic Games out of politics! Let’s support the Chinese people in becoming part of the “One World, One Dream!”
